What badge rules do
Badge rules let you automatically assign the right badge to a visitor based on who they are, without your front desk staff having to pick one manually every time. You can condition a rule on a visitor's type, like contractor or vendor, or on whether they're a US citizen or not. Once a rule matches a visitor at check-in, GroundControl assigns the badge type you've configured for that rule.
Getting to Badge Rules
You'll find this under Badge Rules in your admin panel. The page shows every rule you've created so far, along with its priority, whether it's active, and a quick summary of its conditions and the badges it assigns. To start a new one, select Create Rule in the top right.
Naming your rule and setting its priority
When the Create Badge Rule window opens, start with a Rule Name. You can also add a short description to remind yourself later what the rule is for.
Priority is what decides which rule wins if a visitor could match more than one. Lower numbers are evaluated first, so if you want your citizenship rule to take precedence over a catch-all default rule, give it a lower number, like 1.
Setting the citizenship condition
Under Conditions, you'll see a Citizenship Types option with two checkboxes, US Citizens and Non-US Citizens. Check US Citizens to have this rule apply only to visitors who identify as US citizens during check-in. If you also want to narrow the rule further, you can combine it with specific Visitor Types in the same section, or leave conditions empty if you want a rule to apply to everyone.
Assigning the badge
Scroll down to Badge Assignment to choose what happens when a visitor matches this rule. It's a good idea to also choose a Fallback Badge Type, like General Access, in case the primary badge type runs out or isn't available at check-in time.
Saving and confirming it works
Make sure Active is checked, then select Create to save your rule. It'll now appear in your Badge Rules list with a summary like "Citizenship: US Citizens" under Conditions, and your chosen badge under Primary Badges. To confirm it's working, try checking in a test visitor and entering US citizenship, then check that they receive the badge type you configured.
