Unit Conversion Tool

How to convert your dimensions and tolerances between units with GroundControl.

Overview

GroundControl can automatically convert the units of your dimensions and tolerances and display the converted values right on your drawing and in your results table.

💡 Set up your tolerances before using the Unit Conversion tool. When you set tolerances, you also set the unit for each dimension — and the Unit Conversion tool relies on those units to know what it's converting from.

Before you start

Open a ballooned drawing with your dimensions captured and your tolerances set with the unit filled out. This step is necessary for unit conversion to work correctly.

Converting your dimensions

Turn on the Unit Conversion tool. A panel will open on the right side with the settings to configure.

GroundControl detects the current unit based on your default tolerances or individual tolerances setup by the user.

To start the process for unit conversion, set the Converted Unit and enable unit conversion. GroundControl will immediately add conversion annotations onto the drawing and create an additional column in the spreadsheet showing the converted values.

You can control how these converted values appear:

  • Toggle on/off the conversion annotations on the drawing.

  • Toggle on/off the converted values in the spreadsheet.

There will also be a new column in the characteristic column with the converted values, which can be toggled on and off with the Spreadsheet toggle.

Converting your tolerances

To convert tolerance units as well, switch to the Tolerance Units tab and select the unit you want to convert to (again, for example, millimeters to inches). The converted values will then display with their tolerances attached.

Exporting your report

When you export your report, you can choose whether to use the converted values in the export, and whether to include the unit conversion bubbles in the exported report.

These are accessible by checking off the check marks the AS9102 forms and Bubble Drawing Sections.
