Getting Started

Your first look at GroundControl.

Updated over a month ago

GroundControl is designed to make AS9102 FAI Reports simple. We help you create error-free reports in minutes, not days. This guide will walk you step-by-step through completing a FAIR. Every report is unique and some may contain a variety of special requirements. Feel free to reach out to [email protected] if you have questions about this, or click the blue message icon in the bottom right or left corner to start a conversation with us now.

Depending on your business, your account is setup in one of two versions of the application:

We recommend saving a bookmark to your version so it is easily accessible.

During the onboarding process, an account will be generated for you and delivered to your email. Click the "SET YOUR PASSWORD" link in the onboarding email and follow the instructions to log in for the first time.

Going forward, you can come back to this website and click Sign In using your email, password, and a 2FA code. The standard 6-digit 2FA code is delivered to your email. It is possible to setup 2FA with a different application, which you can contact support about if email is not accessible for your facility. If you are setup with an alternative mechanism, you can access our help guide here. If your facility is setup with an IdP login, this will be detected when you enter your email.

If you need to reset your password, you can do so by clicking "Forgot your password?" beneath the Password input field.

💡 Note: Entering a password too many times will result in your account being locked, and you’ll need to contact GroundControl Support to unlock your account.

Dashboard

Once you have successfully logged in, you will be redirected to the main dashboard. Here you will see a table of your company’s FAIRs, some information about each one, and the ability to open, duplicate, or delete. Click on a row to open a FAIR, or click “Create new FAIR” to start a new report. You can add “Tags” to a report, assign the report to a team member, or click on the "Due Date" column to edit the Due Date for any given FAIR.

Just like with Forms 1, 2, and 3 in GroundControl, your dashboard column changes will automatically save when clicking out of the text field.

To create a new FAIR, you must select an existing customer or create a new customer. You can do so by typing into the auto-complete box shown in the image below.

For customers with specific form requirements, you may need to use a custom template. If your facility uses any custom template reports, you can find your custom templates in the Create new FAIR pop-up. This will add your additional custom fields and forms and will export to your chosen template later. Custom templates will only be present if you have worked with us to create one for your specific customer previously.

💡 If you are in need of a custom template, please reach out to [email protected] or [email protected] to discuss your needs and we would be happy to assist.

💡 Don’t worry if you make a mistake! You can edit this later on.

FAIR Navigation Panel

Use the navigation panel on the left to switch between the three forms, the export pane, and the FAIR settings. You will see blue, green, or red next to each Form, indicating the current status. If red (meaning missing data), it will let you know how many fields are missing.

💡 You can use keyboard shortcuts to quickly switch between forms! Press [Alt] + [form #] to switch quickly. Alt+1 for Form 1, Alt+2 for Form 2, Alt+3 for Form 3

Forms 1 & 2

You can now begin filling in the report forms. Use the navigation panel at the top left of the screen to navigate between each Form, and the Export Panel. See the Navigation Panel section for more information.

To fill out Form 1 and 2, simply type into any field. Information is saved as soon as your focus leaves a given field. This can be done by using Enter or Tab to automatically go to the next field, or using your mouse to click anywhere on the screen. A notification will pop up indicating if the data was saved successfully.

Form 3

Once you navigate to form 3 using the navigation panel, you must upload a PDF of the drawing that you will be ballooning. Note that only .pdf files up to 100MB are accepted. Once you upload your PDF, you will see your characteristics and your PDF side by side, with a spreadsheet below. These can all be resized by dragging the divider between them.

If you find you need more space, you can hit the pop-out button at the top of Form 3 in order to open the spreadsheet space in another window. Opening this window on a separate monitor may be useful when working with larger sets of balloons.

You can hover over any icon in the toolbar (above the PDF) to see its hotkey. The majority of these are configuration settings or operating modes. You have additional PDF editing options directly above your drawing.

Creating a New Characteristic (Balloon)

To start ballooning, make sure Annotation Mode is active (green) in the toolbar. Simply click anywhere on the PDF, drag your cursor over the required area, and then let go of the click. You will see a dashed line annotation, and a corresponding balloon to the left of it. The text will then be parsed and placed into the Requirements field of the newly created characteristic. You can toggle between the text and an image of the characteristic with the Use Image toggle.

To delete a balloon, make sure Annotation Mode is off, then click the balloon you want to delete, and lastly, click the Delete button in the top right corner of your drawing.

💡 If the AI engine determines the characteristic is a measurement, optional tolerance fields will automatically be shown and filled out.

There are two ways to fill out values in Form 3. The main way is to simply enter data into the table at the bottom of the page. This table is fully editable, similar to Excel. You can also take advantage of multi-cell copy & paste.

Clicking on a row in the characteristics table will also allow you to edit values in the characteristic card to the left of the drawing PDF.

Similar to Form 1 & 2, simply type any value and use Enter, Tab or your mouse to click outside of the field, which will automatically save that data. If the requirement is a measurement, the Tolerance checkbox should be checked which will allow you to enter your value and compare it to a given set of tolerances.

For more information on tolerances, see Tolerances.

Export

When you're ready, head to the Export section using the top navigation bar.

🚨 Note the Export button may be red. This occurs if you have any issues outstanding, usually due to missing data. You can still export your report by overriding this warning.

Excel

This will output an Excel file with Sheets for Form 1, Form 2, and Form 3 per the AS9102C standard.

This will not include any attachments uploaded to Forms 2 and 3.

PDF

This option will output a single PDF with the following sections:

  • Forms 1, 2, and 3 of the AS9102C

  • Balloon Drawing

  • All files uploaded to Form 2 (material certs, functional test proof, etc)

Form 2 Attachments

This option will output a single PDF combining all of the files uploaded to Form 2.

Net-Inspect

This option will output your data from Forms 1, 2, and 3 to a Net-Inspect compatible Excel template. You can then upload this template into Net-Inspect to prevent duplicate data entry. To upload into Net-Inspect, choose "Create New FAIR", then "Import from External", then upload your file.

This will not include any attachments uploaded to Forms 2 and 3. Please be sure to upload these attachments yourself when importing to Net-Inspect.

Pro Shop

This export will produce a .csv file that can be uploaded into Pro Shop ERP.

Custom Templates

If you have any custom templates applied to your FAIR, you can choose them from this dropdown to generate an excel workbook.
